We had Luke's first conferences for second grade yesterday. He's doing well and testing above the expected math and reading for his grade. We're trying to get ourselves familiarized with the new reading level system (as are the teachers), but it was helpful to discuss it with his teacher to get us on the same page. (The new system is IRLA if any one's familiar.) I was also encouraged to hear that Luke is a good "helper" to Mrs. Parker in that he is not contributing to the noisiness in the classroom that's been an issue and he's staying on task during independent work time. Proud momma here:)

Nora started with a runny nose this week and we just thought it was a cold (especially since Papa and Brent both started with cold symptoms too). Yesterday, Brent realized that Nora had pushed through her first molar sometime this week. We had no idea that was happening! I'm telling you, parenting is a continually humbling experience. The guessing game of "what do these symptoms add up to" can be exhausting to figure out (is it an ear infection, just a cold, etc, etc). Then, once the explanation is clear, hindsight is 20/20. Of course the runny nose, increased fussiness, waking up earlier than normal, and eating less make sense that it was teething now. Sheesh! And, I'm sure the symptoms will continue since she has a bump on the other side of her mouth where another molar is trying to break through.

It's October, which means Brent likes to make fun of me for being old. My birthday is in October and his is is November, so I'm one month older than him. We had the following conversation the other night when I wasn't feeling well:
Brent: "Do you think it (the fact that you aren't feeling well) could just be old age catching up with you?"
Me: "Yeah, it's probably menopause setting in."
I got him! Even he thought that was ridiculous:)

Miss Nora is stretching her walking/standing abilities! She walked back and forth between Brent and I several times one night without holding anything. She was also practicing standing in the middle of the room without assistance several times this week. We're getting closer to having a walker!

A couple of my favorite fall things: boots and fall colors!
BAH!!! Menopause! I am saving that one for sure. Are you 32 or 31 this year? I can never remember if you're just slightly older than me, or a lot older than me. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome Luke is doing so well at school! I always went in to the conferences a little nervous, but left very proud. I wouldn't expect anything less of Luke being a great helper. He is a great kid. Washington recently switched to Accelerated Reader (AR). Volunteers and aides spent HOURS relabeling the classroom and library books. I liked it because you could go to their website and easily find appropriate books for your budding readers. I hope this new programs works well for Gibbs!
Love, love those boots. and those leaves. all you're missing is a warm beverage (preferably coffee). lots of love girl.
32 it is...WAY older;) Remember, you're my younger sister's age. Those are my fav boots too: super comfy, my fav color, and great for lots of outfits:)
DeletePS The Lost Husband on your shelfari... is that a book you recommended to me or did i see a review somewhere else? I'm going to check to see if our library has it.
ReplyDeleteI've read Katherine Center's other books and just got The Lost Husband from the library. Her novels all involve motherhood and can be quite funny. I'd recommend Everyone is Beautiful for you to start with since it's about a mom who just moved to a new city for her husband's job and they have three little kids:)
DeleteIf you are old, I am ready for the "farm." This week in class we did an exercise where people had to be eliminated from a small raft. They chose all old people (those 50 and older) and those who were sick. Didn't feel very encouraging in my current situation. Glad you are young enough to see the humor in it yet. Sometimes, youth is overrated though. I am pretty settled in my own skin if the bones inside the skin would just be nicer to me. Love to you all in this beautiful season, literally and metaphorically.
ReplyDeleteI just love that video of the boys and Nora! So, so sweet. Thank you for sharing your life with us!
