We Love Wednesdays

Como Zoo/Town

Friday, Nora and I made an impromptu trip to Como Zoo and Como Town on my day off.  Brent was working and Luke had plans to go to Conquer Ninja Warrior Gym with cousins, and the rain held off as we hoped!  We had a lovely cool and quiet day at Como together.  We even got to see a baby giraffe, baby orangutan, and two baby tamarins.  A few of my favorite pics from our day together:

Lifelong Friends

Saturday, three "high school" friends came over with their kiddos, but really, I've known two of them since elementary school.  It was so great to see them all, to catch up, share parenting stories, and just be together.  The kids got along great too!  So great to have them all in my life and near enough to see each other occasionally.

Middle School
Luke started sixth grade at Stewartville Middle School and it's been going great!  We were a little concerned with the transition to another new school, a different schedule, locker combinations, etc, etc, but it's going great!  I cannot express how incredibly happy I am to hear Luke say this is his favorite school so far (Gibbs, Bear Cave, and Stew Middle School).  The middle school and high school share a building, but are on separate wings.  So, this is the last school Luke will be in until he graduates....yikes!

Gibbs Friends
Luke has some sweet friends from his first elementary school in Rochester that still get together a few times a year.  This week, they met at Archery Addiction, a new place in Rochester set up with nerf-type archery equipment.  I think of it as a mix between paintball and American Gladiator (you remember the show from the 90s:))  The boys had a great time and it was nice to see the boys and their parents we've known since kindergarten/first grade at Gibbs.

Preschool Meet the Teacher
We got to meet Nora's teacher tonight.  She's at the same preschool this year, but has a different teacher and different schedule.  Last year she went to the 3-4 year old class two mornings a week and this year she will go to the 4-5 year old class three mornings a week.  She seemed comfortable in the classroom and finding her locker.  We hope it will be another great year of Early Childhood School Readiness in Stewartville for Nora!

We Love Wednesdays

I've lost track of We Love Wednesdays this summer, but I really love them so I'm back!  Some fun from the past couple weeks in August as we drink up the last of summer.

Skyline

We made a summer bucket list with the kids which included mini golfing and go carts.  We had a quiet, beautiful Saturday so we headed to Skyline in Rochester to do both!  Nora claims she won mini golf because she was the first to hit her ball into the last hole:)  She did concede that Luke won go carts though because it was undeniable that he was faster than the rest of us.  It was a very fun afternoon together.  The kids are at great ages to do fun activities together, and we were blessed to do many this summer!

but happily rides along

gets with go carts:)
Middle School Orientations

We've been very impressed with Stewartville Public Schools and how well they have oriented the new sixth graders to the middle school.  Last spring the 5th graders got to spend part of a day touring the school and had lunch in the cafeteria (the kids all claim the food is better, but it's actually the same as elementary;)).  This August, they have had a one-stop-shop for forms, pictures, screenings, schedule pick up, a separate orientation run by 8th graders for the 6th graders, and, finally, a separate meet the teacher night.  It's been great getting acquainted with everything new.  Luke seemed very familiar and comfortable with his surroundings at the one-stop-shop, found his locker, memorized his locker combination (he is his father's son;)), and found his classrooms pretty easily too. He's a pretty quiet boy, so sometimes it's hard to know how he's really feeling, but he seemed more confident about it all than I feel as a new mother of a middle schooler.  (How is that possible!?1?!  Didn't I just meet Brent in 8th grade???)  School starts Monday, August 28, so there is no turning back now!

Day Trips

My sister is a rock star!  She works hard at Mayo, plays hard with her two littles, and makes time for many other people she loves in between.  This August, she had two days off that she decided to spend day tripping with my kids, Grandma, and her daughter, Piper.  One week they spent the day at the La Crosse Children's Museum and the next week they spent the day at Mall of America.  Such great memories together.

Lost Tooth

I can hardly believe it, but Nora is old enough to start losing teeth!  She told us early August that she had a lose tooth, which we pass off thinking it'd be a long time before it actually came out.  Well, the night of August 17, it came out while she was eating a rice krispie bar:)  She was SO proud and has referred to it and turning 5 as proof of how big she is now.

Routine Changes

With school starting very soon, we've been getting the kids gradually conditioned back into night time and morning routines.  This summer they spent most nights sleeping in each other's rooms or camping out on the couches downstairs.  We told them last week that they needed to start sleeping back in their beds during the week, so they had one last camp out downstairs.  I love that they love each other and time together:)

Summer

This summer has been filled with all the feels...and I mean filled:  excitement, fear, joy, tears, and so much love.

I think of summer being between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Here's what we've shared so far.

Summer started off with a low key Memorial Day weekend at home and the following week was filled with end of school year events for Nora (see post).  The first weekend of June brought a family crisis (which I won't go into) that was emotionally draining but ended with a positive outcome.

The first week of June, Luke had a fun-filled week:  starting his summer 3-on-3 basketball league, ending his 5th grade school year (and elementary years!), running in the first All Comer Track Meet of the summer, and making his first trip to the Conquer Ninja Warrior Gym with cousins.

The second and third weeks of June meant vacation for all of us!  After years of discussions and planning, we were finally going to Disney World with our friends, the Riggins and Jill!

Wednesday, June 14: We flew MSP to KC to ORL and stayed at a hotel by the Orlando airport.

Thursday, June 15: We met Riggins at our rental house and started right out in the pool in our backyard (the kids were too excited to even put on swimsuits and jumped in fully clothed:))

Friday, June 16: Our first park day!  We lasted a full 12 hours!  Universal was a great mix of stuff for the big and little kids and we only had a short rain delay in the afternoon that closed some rides.  We agreed this was our second favorite park of the trip.
Universal Studios: Transformers, Gringotts, Kang and Kodos Twirl and Hurl (Octopus), ET, Hogwarts Express to Islands of Adventure
Island of Adventure:  Dragon Challenge (4 times), flight of Hippogriff, Harry Potter Forbidden Journey, Jurassic Park River Adventure (twice), Pteranadon Flyers, Skull Island: Reign of Kong, Spiderman, Hulk Coaster, Caro-Suess-el, Cat in the Hat

Saturday, June 17: Our first Disney park day!  This park had more for the big kids to do/ride, but the girls had a good time meeting characters.  It was a hot day without a rain reprieve until the evening, so we headed back to the house/pool by late afternoon.
Disney Hollywood Studios: Tower of Terror, Rockin Rollercoaster, Toy Story Mania, Star Tours Adventure Continues, Jedi Training, Met Mickey, Minnie, and Olaf

Sunday, June 18: We made an hour trip to New Smryna Beach for a seafood lunch at Norwood Eatery and Bar Treehouse and a fun afternoon in the waves.  We really liked this beach and would definitely visit again.

Monday, June 19: We made our way to the iconic castle and biggest Disney park.  This park had more for the little girls to enjoy, including our Princess Lunch in Cinderella's Castle.  Unfortunately, the rain started at lunch and continued all afternoon.  By late afternoon the kids were tired of the rain and wearing ponchos so we called it a day.  We had hoped to hang for the evening parade and fireworks :(
Disney Magic Kingdom: Haunted Mansion, It's a Small World, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Little Mermaid, Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, Dumbo, Stitch's Great Escape, Tomorrowland Speedway, Mad Tea Party, Peter Pan, Tom Sawyer Island, Princess Lunch

Tuesday, June 20: Our final park day was voted the favorite for everyone!  It was also the only day that it didn't rain at all.  We got to experience Pandora, the World of Avatar, two weeks after it opened and it was awesome.  Animal Kingdom was a great mix for big and little kids and we kept cool with lots of cool treats :)
Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest (twice), Dinosaur, Kilimanjaro Safari, Triceratop Spin, Primeval Whirl, Kali River Rapids, It's Tough to Be a Bug (twice), Avatar Flight of Passage, Navi River Journey

Wednesday, June 21: We spent our last day relaxing by the pool at our house and the community pools in the housing development.  A perfect end to vacation:)  We also rented Avatar since the boys hadn't seen it and were intrigued after exploring Pandora the day before.

Thursday, June 22: We flew ORL to KC to MSP and returned to cool, beautiful weather in Minnesota.  Just what I wanted after a hot and humid week plus in Florida:)

It was an amazing trip and we loved sharing it with our great friends!  Special thanks to Erika who did lots of research before the trip, my friend Laura who has been to Disney many times and shared helpful tips, my sister for loaning us her double stroller that was wonderful for giving the kids breaks when they needed and hauling our cooler every day, and my parents for sharing their cooler that fit perfectly on the stroller.

The end of June brought us back to work and routine before more fun in July.  Brent had his final post surgery appointment (surgery info here) with the surgeon who said he's recovering well, but should wait until his calves are more equal in size and strength before playing basketball again.  Brent's been very active running (since May) and lifting, but recovery simply takes time and he's done great without any setbacks.

The first weekend of July through July 4th was Summerfest in Stewartville.  On the fourth, we spent the day with Riggins, Wagers, and Looneys taking in lots of Summerfest.  We did some games and rides at the park, enjoyed the parade, and watched the fireworks from our driveway.

The next week brought lots of fun to our house with college friends!  July 7th Stroms arrived and July 8th Ericksons arrived!  We also got to celebrate our niece and nephew's birthdays in between.  Piper (3) and Paker (1) both have summer birthdays and had a shared party.

The week with Stroms and Ericksons was wonderful!  The guys (big and little) golfed, the mommas had lunch out to celebrate Callie's birthday, the kids played like crazy, we visited with other friends and family, visited Oxbow, and simply enjoyed each other's company.  It was perfect.

July 15th we spent the day with family and friends.  Luke, Mekhi, Annalise, and Ethan ran the Kids Obstacle Race in Eyota, then in the afternoon we celebrated Nora's 5th birthday with an Art on the Go party in our garage.  It was a great day!

July 16-21 was Luke's first full week of camp at Pine Haven Christian Assembly (our church back ground's church camp) in Park Rapids, MN.  He had a great time with his cousin Mekhi and friend Eli and peripherally knew many other kids through Brent and I.  Our friend Ethan, Eli's dad, was also a volunteer for the week.  They had great weather and Luke soaked up all of the water time with tubing, kayaking, and swimming:)  He also came back with lots of question and discussion about what he learned during the week.

This week also brought some sickness for us at home.  Nora had a ruptured eardrum and ear infection and was under the weather for about a week.  Brent's mom also started a very difficult journey (that is still in progress) with her health that has included three hospitalizations and countless tests and infusions.  She is still awaiting a specific diagnosis, but thankfully making some progress with her symptoms.

The last week of July was fun and busy for Luke with football camp, archery, and wrapping up his golf camp with a tournament.  Brent and I also celebrated 14 years of marriage and got a date overnight thanks to Papa and Gma Beckmann.

Then August came.  Looking ahead at the calendar, it looked to be a quiet month before the busyness of fall and school started.  But, we woke August 1 to news that our good friend from high school had died (more here).  We spent the week mourning and reminiscing with Matt's family and our friends from high school.  It was a horrible and beautiful week all at once.

This summer has been filled with all the feels...and I mean filled:  excitement, fear, joy, tears, and so much love.   It was filled with people we love and many memories were made.  It was life, good and bad, and it has taught us a lot.

Matt

There are moments in life that stop you in your tracks.  I had one today.

Brent and I woke to the news that our good friend from high school had lost his battle with depression.

We didn't see Matt often after high school, but we lived high school together.  We had the wonderful opportunity to see Matt 18 months ago at another friend's wedding.  We reminisced, we laughed, we even went to Matt's parent's house where we spent so much time in high school...and, we talked about how we wanted to see each other more often...

Yet, here we are today, 18 months later.  The door is closed on making more memories.  Our hearts ache.

Brent and I each have our own memories and stories with Matt, but we shared a lot too.  Brent's memories started earlier than mine on the basketball court in elementary school.  Mine started in middle school.  As I went through old pictures tonight, I realized just how much we lived high school together....
  • 7 of the 10 high school dances I went to were in a group of friends that included Matt, many of which we gathered at his house for pictures in his parent's beautiful backyard
  • Senior year spring break to Florida
  • Countless basketball games watching him, Brent, Brett, and Isaac play together
  • Countless days and nights spent at his house with his family and our friends
  • He dated one of my best friends and I dated one of his
I'll forever think of Matt when I hear Pearl Jam, when I see an Airedale Terrier (his family pet, Dancer), when I see a Ford Explorer (like he drove in high school and I saw on my drive home today), and when I think of high school.  Matt was woven through my high school experience and I hate that he's gone.

Pardon the pictures of pictures, but I wanted to share Matt...
